Spanish is one of my top subjects! I have studied Spanish in school for 5 years at the college level and have also studied abroad in Spain and Argentina. Although it is not my major, I almost have enough credits to have a degree in Spanish. I have taken classes on translation, Spanish phonology and phonetics, and learning and teaching foreign language in addition to general course work focusing on the Spanish language and Spanish-speaking cultures.

Spanish is one of my top subjects! I have taught Spanish 201 and 202 (intermediate level courses) at ISU as a TA, worked as a bilingual customer service rep and hold a Bachelor degree in Spanish (and Sociology) from Drake. I make understanding grammar and other concepts accessible and easy.

I like to begin by ascertaining the level of the student. Learning is best achieved when the student actively takes part, remains focused, engages in dialogue about the material. If teaching a group I enjoy 'interactive lecture/presentation' and group discussion. I employ a variety of mediums (depending on the subject matter to help communicate material. Regarding one on one tutoring, the best method, I believe, is to work with the student to identify what are the concepts that they struggle with and explain/demonstrate these concepts from a variety of different perspectives.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe in setting goals and working to ensure they are accomplished. In my opinion, learning should never feel like a boring chore. The student should be working hard, but enjoying him or herself in the process, and this is when the most efficient and effective learning occurs. I work to impart certain values in the students I serve, including: fortitude, imagination and pride.
While I earned my bachelor's degree in communication from Loyola, I also worked as an Academic coach for high school students. I spent a year tutoring students for an academic competition that tested all skill areas including, writing, math, history and science. A Little Bit About Me...

As a college graduate, I started my teaching career in a catholic elementary school. I taught second grade for a year and first grade for two years. It was truely rewarding to see students become fluent readers. I relocated and took a position as a special education assosciate. I worked with four special education teachers. I worked with both groups of students and individuals on their IEP progression. After that I spent 13 years as a fourth grade teacher. I taught all subject areas. Wrote curriculum, served on committees, and belonged to educational organizations.

I first started tutoring in high school, both privately and as a volunteer. My favorite subjects to tutor were Algebra and Calculus, though I also tutored Spanish, English, and Biology. I had several regular students and additional students during peak times like finals week and AP season. In college, I continued this work in a more formal setting as a lab assistant, teaching assistant, and tutor for the Grinnell College Science Learning Center. I had a semester of graduate school at Iowa in Classics. At Tulane, I studied advanced statistics as well as marketing. I had two years of Spanish at DMACC. I also studied Bosnian and German at DMPS Continuing Education. For all standardized tests, I always scored in the top 1% including the PSAT, SAT, ACT and GMAT.
