I received a BS in Horticulture from Va. Polytechnic Institute and State University. majored in Biology (Botany) for 3 years at Virginia Commonwealth Univ. and College of William and Mary. Recently retook Precalculus, Calculus 1, Calculus 2, and Calculus 3 at Virginia Western Community College. I have a background tutoring and running a tutoring center for STEM subjects at a community college for 3 years. I have been tutoring in some form for 6 years. I have a certification in tutoring ESL and several years experience in that. i am pretty relaxed and informal, but I expect students to do the work assigned. I help, but I don't do the work for them. I use Socratic questioning to get students to understand the material. I stress learning concepts and building on them as opposed to memorizing or guessing enough to pass a test.

I thoroughly enjoy teaching students at various ages and stages of development. I consider myself to be very creative, and I try to give the students as much hands-on experience as possible. I am constantly seeking feedback from the student in terms of how well I am presenting the subject matter, so my methods of teaching will vary. I am always open to new ideas. After 6 years of successful and rewarding experiences in secondary education, I decided to return to college and obtain a Masters Degree in Education. I began my PhD in Ecology at Old Dominion University in 2004, and after completing a 150 page dissertation on spiders and carnivorous plants, passing written and oral comprehensive exams, and completing over 72 hours of graduate coursework, I was awarded my PhD in 2010. I have won multiple teaching awards, including the 2009 Biology Dept Adjunct Professor of the Year at Old Dominion University. I have taught general biology lab and lecture, genetics lab and lecture, ecology lecture, and evolution lecture at multiple academic institutions over the past six years. I graduated high school in 2003 as the valedictorian of my class. I maintained my high level of academics in college but didn't know what I wanted to do for a career. I graduated in 2007 with my business degree and moved to NC. I worked for a mental health agency helping children in broken homes with school work and being a positive male role model as well as taking pre reqs to return to school for my masters degree in physical therapy.
