My comments on tutoring Political Science : I have vast knowledge of the political system.

I try to engage my student, to tease the learning out of him or her. I have learned to explain, to give the information then to step back, allowing my student to think through to the conclusion. This involves silence sometimes, and the student talking more while I talk less, something not so easy for a teacher of Italian descent. Experiences has shown, however, that it often works.

Experience in the study of British and American Literature, also have made a study of History in America and Britain as well during undergraduate coursework. During my Master's I studied British Literature and was a teaching assistant. During that time I spent two years teaching composition and argumentation at Bowling Green State University to cover college level essay writing which required both classroom and individual tutoring outside of class. The single most important thing about being a teacher or mentor is to be respectful, socially aware, and sensitive. Okay, that's three things, but they kind of go together. The second most important thing about being a mentor is to create understanding about the underlying principle of whatever it is he or she is learning about. Once you understand the underlying principle, the "how to" stuff becomes a *lot* easier to understand and remember. On the other hand, a person who's trying to learn the "how to" stuff without understanding the underlying principles is likely to forget key things, to be tripped up when an unexpected question arises, and to get into other trouble.
