Teach multiple strategies and techniques for successful learning!
My name is Robin and I have excellent teaching strategies for learning. I focus in on academic success, especially for struggeling learners. I start with the basics in all subject areas and make sure basic concepts are learned first then advance on to higher level thinking techniques to broaden my students overall knowledge in the core area they are studying. I have been teaching and tutoring for over 3 years now. I have done both resource base instruction and consult teaching with other teachers. Resource instuction is instruction done in small groups that works on developing skills, teaching strategies for stuggeling learners, and advancing already learned skills. As an infectious disease researcher, I have applied skills obtained since high school. My chemistry and biology skills were necessary to make bases, induce parasite inoculations, and process my data by ELISAs, DNA Extractions, Chromatography, Crystallography, and PCRs. My grammatical skills were essential for laboratory proposals, reports, and presentations. I have tutored high schools students in many areas of need, as a PEPP tutor, but have concentrated on biology, chemistry, and math.
Teaching is a skill that requires flexibility. As a college student, I have tried many different studying techniques and have succeeded in finding one suitable for my style. Teaching requires different styles and techniques until one is successful. I have observed that the "fun facts" taught by professors are what are most remember able. I am more than happy to try different teaching skills ... read more

I very much enjoy working with students. I get along easily with others, and am patient and understanding when teaching. I have good listening skills and try to really pinpoint a student's strengths and weaknesses. I think that tailoring questions and problems to a student's current knowledge level is important for motivating and challenging him or her without too much frustration. I think personalized teaching can really make a huge difference for a student.

I have been working with younger students since middle school as a leader at my church in the children's church summer bible school program as well as other church events. Academically, I have earned the Gold Humanism in Medicine award, thus I have a strong ability to relate and communicate with others. I've been blessed with a great ability to motivate individuals and have used this for students, patients, and my soldiers alike. I would like to use the skills I've earned to help others achieve their academic and personal potential.

A Little Bit About Me...

Typically, most students I have worked with are fairly bright, it is just about finding the right way to explain the complicated science in plain english so that they can understand it. Tell the right story, use the right analogy, or draw the right parallels and the student can grasp and understand almost anything.
I have previously worked in a laboratory where I had the opportunity to work with students rotating through my laboratory for school credit. I was an adjunct clinical instructor with the Department of Biotechnology and Clinical Laboratory Sciences with University at Buffalo. Although some students were only there two weeks, most were there three to five months, and it was my responsibility to show them all the analyses that were performed in my laboratory, as well as make sure they understood the theory behind the analyses.

Tutoring provides a great opportunity for one on one learning while using different teaching strategies. During that time, I can find out student strengths and weaknesses and tailor lessons based on this. I feel that a one on one environment allows a student to feel more comfortable in asking questions and expressing what he or she is having difficulties with. This can be challenging, sometimes, in the classroom setting.
I have a very diverse educational and work-place resume. This includes both undergraduate and graduate courses in the chemical and biological sciences, as well as education courses. My work experience also includes teaching at the high school level and extensive laboratory work in both the chemical and life sciences. This has allowed me to apply my laboratory experience to the classroom and tutoring students. I have tutored high school students in Regents and ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I found a lot of satisfaction in tutoring in college and felt that I was an effective teacher. My students did well in courses that they had been struggling to pass. I use a step-by-step approach starting with what the student knows and connect to everyday life experiences. This approach works particularly well in subjects like physics or chemistry. While a good test score is the goal, I may teach fundamentals so the student understands the subject. This facilitates learning and memorization.
I graduated cum laude from D'Youville College with a BS degree in biology and a minor in chemistry. At D’Youville in 2001-2003 I tutored advanced sciences. The most complex course was Gross Anatomy in which I worked with students on both coursework and laboratory dissection. I also tutored physics and biological chemistry, my area of particular interest. I have approximately four ye ... read more

I enjoy earnest and humble students, learning with and from them. I feel uncomfortable not learning laterally as well as vertically, seeing that to be knowledgeable, one must not just memorize but ruminate on what was memorized, making as many lateral connections as expedient. I like to simply direct and expand a student's learning as opposed to an artifactual accomplishment; however, my premiere obligation is punctual achievement of task.
I am qualified to tutor writing, basic computer, reading, basic math, learning, biology, organic chemistry, genetics, geography, and various exams, all from college-level experiences. I had a scientific book in Barnes and Noble, ample graduate-level coursework in Education, experience as a High School teacher, and lived abroad. I have a B.S. in plant biotech from Cornell.

Teaching and working with children not only educates them but it educates myself in the process. I get to touch up on materials that the children are learning, as well as learn better ways to educate students. Patience is what I believe is the most important aspect of teaching. Children can become unfocused very easily. When children are distracted it may be very difficult to get them focused. Taking your time and making sure they refocus, can actually save time. If they are unfocused and miss a part of what is instructed, they will be confused throughout the whole process. It helps to be patient with the educating process. These educators who take the time to make sure everything is understood make a huge difference in each student.
