I enjoy teaching kids of all ages and get along well with them while maintaining a degree of respect from them. I am capable at keeping them on task, even with challenging personalities. I enjoy doing hands-on work as well as print focused work. I have developed patience working with my own six kids in our home. I believe strongly that one-on-one tutoring is the most effective way to help a child achieve and any child will do well when the teaching is tailored to their needs. I enjoy helping students succeed in math. I talk to the student to find out what the student's strengths and weaknesses are. Then I try to relate what they are learning to a skill they have already mastered. I believe students need to know the practical applications for what they are learning. Many of the practical applications come from my financial and woodworking background. I want students to understand the process for solving problems before using and relying on a calculator and to be able to tell if their answer is reasonable. To make math more fun, I like to incorporate their interests into the math they are learning when possible.
