I have been teaching for over twenty years, primarily Middle School Language Arts. I have also taught Head Start, fourth grade, third through eighth grade science, and kindergarten through eighth grade music. I earned my Master’s degree in Classroom Education with an emphasis in MS Language Arts. Desiring to help as many students as possible, I continued taking classes toward a Reading Specialist’s degree. After I received my degree in Elementary Education, I was a substitute teacher in IA for one year. I then worked, taught and advised at a small private college in Iowa. I have also owned and operated a daycare in my home for over three years. Currently have have spent the past two years as a substitute teacher for the Buffalo, MN school district. When this does not work, I do not just tell the student what goes where or why this doesn't work, I give reasons and have them tell me these same reasons the next time we come across something that doesn't work.
At SCSU, I work as a writing consultant at the Writing Center on campus. If for example we are doing a unit on weather then my students may role play a weather man. Gather vocabulary from a newspaper. Count change as if they were really buying something. Read and write from a reporters perspective, or even travel to a museum with a reoprt and description of things they have seen using adjective and adverbs for color and detail.
