I have had a passion for reading all of my life. I pursued a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Wisconsin, which I received in 1973. I have taught children of all ages and disabilities in all academic areas. I prefer working with younger students. I have been published in a national education journal, "The Clearinghouse." I had an assistantship to an ecucation professor at the University of Iowa, where I received my master's degree in special education. I have woeked in small-group and one-to-one settings. As a student of history I tend to emphasize that nothing happens in a vacuum. People and events must be placed in a context. Understanding when and where is an important first step to understanding why, whether the subject be literature, theology, philosophy, or politics. Source materials must be central to any academic undertaking. Every reputable campus has at least one library containing printed resources that are invaluable. Additionally, every student should have access at home to very basic resources such as a dictionary, a thesaurus, and perhaps an encyclopedia. I dread the day that printed material becomes unfashionable.

I first like to understand the student's learning style, as we all have different methods of learning. Some are visual, others do better with reading a text, or using examples. I use a variety of methods to teach my students, depending on age. I also want to learn where and why the student is struggling with the subject.
