A Little Bit About Me...

As an educator, I have learned that not all children are the same and they all learn at different paces. I create a plethora of activites to reach each child where they are. I use visual, auditory, and hands on activities to help reach them build and imporve skills.
I have earned a bachelors in Elementary Education and a Masters Degree in Education Management. I am a very motivating person and tend to use humor as a method of teaching. I teach to and with the child and never down to him/her. I break large components into their simplest forms so that a child learns to take things one step at a time and not feel overwhelmed. I make the learning relevant to what the child is interested in or knows about so that he/she can be more engaged in the learning process. We set the goal-a reasonable one yet with high expectations and together we achieve it.
For the past ten years, I have been teaching High School English. I have taught grades 9-12 in Literature, Composition and Standards of Learning in preparation for the state exams. I have taught inclusion classes involving students with numerous learning styles and have always met and exceeded the expectations of their parents.

A Little Bit About Me...

Whether teaching my son to read, guiding elementary school students through a discussion of the water cycle, or assisting a classmate with a term paper, I always try to employ the Socratic method. I believe that one teaches by asking questions rather than by providing answers. Things learned by rote are easily forgotten. By asking questions, the instructor fully involves the students in the learning process. There is nothing so satisfying to me as seeing students progress under my tutelage.
Having been the top student in my senior class at Norfolk State University, I often assisted my classmates who had difficulties in writing papers. During my time as an undergraduate, I served as a long-term substitute teacher in the Portsmouth Public School system. I recieved my BA in English and graduated with a 3.97 grade point average.
