A Little Bit About Me...

I believe deeply in the power of education to change lives, which is why I have dedicated my life to this purpose. I spent 5 years as a teacher and coach in the country of Vietnam. During this time I taught English as a second language, coached soccer and chess, and launched a sports training business during which time I trained all staff on work processes and procedures. I have returned to the United States to complete a secondary teaching certificate in the subject areas of Business, Marketing, and History as well as a master's degree in education with an emphasis on Career and Technical Education). I have a very flexible approach to teaching and am able to adapt to each student's unique learning style. I am familiar with ‘constructivist’ learning and have successfully applied this approach in the classroom with various strategies designed to assist all students in maximizing their learning. I encourage students to actively participate in their own learning, rather than being passive recipients. Students who are disengaged can become engaged when they are in a positive, supportive environment, where their own individual learning style is catered for. Inquiry based learning as opposed to students as passive ‘sponges’, also creates higher levels of student engagement.

I firmly believe that a good education must be adaptable, flexible, and incorporate a variety of learning styles if it is to be of maximum benefit to students. When teaching, I speak with my students about the kinds of activities they feel assist them most in retaining information as well as observing their learning style independently. I do my best to include activities that incorporate visual, kinesthetic, and oral learners. School isn’t always fun and interesting; it is called “work” for a reason. However, if I can’t make it fun I can at least make it engaging and that is what I strive for.
