My comments on tutoring Shakespeare : I have a BA in English

While in College I was a part time nanny for a single Mom with twins. I started taking care of the twins when they were 2 and continued until they were almost 4. I was an assistant teacher part time at little playmates preschool daycare. During my time there I worked with the 2 and 3 year old class and the 4 and 5 year old class. I also helped the older children with homework. I was responsible for helping with meals, playtime and supervising outside activities. I also volunteered at the learning tree center daycare preschool where I helped with story time and art activities. I was a religious education teacher from 2003 to 2004. I graduated from college in 2005 during which time I did occasional baby-sitting for other families with small children, I have also worked as a full time nanny for 2 boys 2 years and 15 month, as a full time nanny for a 2 year old little boy who I have been wit ... read more

As the first in my family to earn a university degree, I have a strong connection with students of all ages who need educational support. I have more than 20 years of experience teaching English and writing to a diverse range of learners from middle school and high school to PhD research students. While working full-time, I have earned a BS in English Education, MA in English/Non-fiction Writing, and a PhD in English/Writing so I understand the demands students must juggle as they try to educate themselves. I have also worked as a free-lance writer and editor and have published articles, stories, and poetry.
I am a patient, student-centered facilitator of critical thinking and writing skills. With specific training in writing pedagogy, I see the best results in small groups or with individuals when the process of writing can be explored through creative catalysts designed around t ... read more

My style of teaching, especially with tutoring, is to find out what kind of learner my student is: tacit, oral, or verbal. Then the lesson style can be geared to that, while leading the student to become more aware of the other abilities and options. Also, it is imperative that students understand why they are learning what is being presented to them. Cause and effect leads to greater awareness and more objective, analytical, and critical thinking. Creating a reason and success in learning, making it practical and fun can lead any child to want to continue to grow in any area of interest, and tie that back to other skills which my not be so appealing at this point in their life.

In teaching I am basically a generalist and humanist. My background is in mathematics and the sciences, but with a solid foundation in the humanities. Practically, I have never stopped learning something new and in addition to my formal credential I have done university course work in languages, forestry, animal husbandry, and sports training. I believe my teaching style is one in which I help students make associations by way of discovery and interconnections. Much of mathematics can describe the natural world and I attempt to make mathematics both interesting and fund by drawing on these associations.
I have worked in both industry and government working on a worldwide basis with people of varying cultural backgrounds. I have traveled extensively in my profession. Over the last several years I have been involved with several business and working extensively with the Native Americ ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is very flexible. I believe that a learning/tutoring program must be structured to the individual student's needs and build upon his/her strengths. Both the student and the tutor must work as a team to determine the goals of the program, set the work guidelines, establish milestones, and structure the style of the sessions. By working as a team, goals can be reached and the experience can be extremely positive and satisfying. Not only will the student have subject-matter success, but he/she will also develop skills and tools specific to his/her natural learning style. These skills and tools can be used in all future educational endeavors.
I have worked with students of all levels and educational needs. With my 4 children and 4 grandchildren, I have elementary, middle school and high school experience. As a teacher at a Job Corps for 7 years, I had the experie ... read more

More About This Tutor...

English is my passion. I love the written word and believe it to be the highest form expression known to man. This is why I pursued and obtained a degree in English. Though I only have my bachelor's degree, I have studied more literature than most students in the graduate program. I am also a writer on the side, mainly poetry, and have been published by several magazines. Grammar is second nature to me; I know instinctively wrong from right in that department. I don't have as much teaching experience as some, but I am thorough in my duties and eager to fulfill them.
I have always been a fiercely independent learner, and that affected my grades in high school. When the teacher told me to read one thing, I would read another. Many students are of that caliber today. As such, I am able to connect very well with the deviant pupil. As a tutor, my goal is to awaken the interest an ... read more
