My comments on tutoring Special Education : Have experience with students who have special abilities.

While in College I was a part time nanny for a single Mom with twins. I started taking care of the twins when they were 2 and continued until they were almost 4. I was an assistant teacher part time at little playmates preschool daycare. During my time there I worked with the 2 and 3 year old class and the 4 and 5 year old class. I also helped the older children with homework. I was responsible for helping with meals, playtime and supervising outside activities. I also volunteered at the learning tree center daycare preschool where I helped with story time and art activities. I was a religious education teacher from 2003 to 2004. I graduated from college in 2005 during which time I did occasional baby-sitting for other families with small children, I have also worked as a full time nanny for 2 boys 2 years and 15 month, as a full time nanny for a 2 year old little boy who I have been wit ... read more

Ideally, teaching styles should be individually tailored to the student's needs. The one-on-one environment of tutoring offers an exceptional opportunity to do this! The learning styles of students vary widely; however, I believe all students respond to an approach which includes kindness, respect, persistence, and the acceptance of the student as an individual. I believe in encouraging students to ask questions, and showing them where to find the answers.
Although it took me 15 years to obtain my B.S. in Business Management, I do not view that as a disadvantage. My travels with my military husband enriched my education by enabling me to experience different cultures, and by giving me the opportunity to meet, live among, and work with people of many different backgrounds. My teaching style is very flexible. I believe that a learning/tutoring program must be structured to the individual student's needs and build upon his/her strengths. Both the student and the tutor must work as a team to determine the goals of the program, set the work guidelines, establish milestones, and structure the style of the sessions. By working as a team, goals can be reached and the experience can be extremely positive and satisfying. Not only will the student have subject-matter success, but he/she will also develop skills and tools specific to his/her natural learning style. These skills and tools can be used in all future educational endeavors.

Teaching is not only my career, it's my life. I strongly believe in Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences which states that there are eight different pathways to learning; as a result, I rely on kinesthetic, spatial, and musical intelligences to present new information. I make my expectations clear to my students, and my students clearly state their expectations of me. I advocate and work hard for my students to show that I truly want to help better their lives.

I desire to see every student succeed in life. Succeeding in school is a big part of learning to become successful in your life. Not so much the individual grades that a student gets, but learning responsibility, perseverance, goal-setting, and striving to do your best. Many students feel like failures through no fault of their own. I love to help students realize success and begin to believe in themselves. I believe that one person can make a difference in a child’s life, and I want to be that person. Each student is an individual, so my style of teaching would depend on your child and the topic.

Socratic, I like the students to build on what they already know so that it becomes an extension of their long term memory not another short term memory soon forgotten. I have found ways to connect almost any subject matter from physics to algebra to chemistry nomenclature into something one already knows. If one uses long term memory pegs one can "file" things in memory and recall with very little effort.
