A Little Bit About Me...

I am a graduate of Chico State with a BS in Computer Science and I was a student of their honors program. I was not a formal tutor, but I spent a lot of time with junior classmates helping them to understand their projects and meet their deadlines. After graduating, I worked as an instructor at Mendocino College. I taught computer science classes to young adults from different backgrounds and with different learning styles. My approach to teaching is to provide what is needed, and sometimes that is not limited to the explicit task at hand. As an English teacher/tutor, I have often found that, rather than merely showing students how to recognize a complete sentence and use correct punctuation and grammar, the more important thing is to prove to them that they can think, and that they are intelligent. To this end, I use gentle Socratic questioning to stimulate students, loosen them up, get them interested, and increase their comfort. Often, what comes out of a student's mouth is surprisingly wonderful, and I quickly say, "That's great! Write that down!"
