My comments on tutoring Chess : I was taught as an adolescent.

My method of tutoring is to work with students where they are and add to their skills, to accomplish the final outcome, preferably an "A" or "B." Some students are visual learners and some are informational learners, or some students combine the two. The potential I see in students is what I try to bring out and have them realize they are capable of going a step further, to reach their goal. The importance of education and the students' continuance of same cannot be stressed enough.
I started out tutoring elementary students in basic math and English grammar while I attended college part time in the 1980's. I continued tutoring young students and adults in the 1990's, tutoring Basic Math, Basic and Intermediate Algebra, Basic Geometry, English Composition, Speech, Study Skills and the Sciences. In addition, tips were given to enhance test-taking skills in hard-to-Ace subjects ... read more

I went to public schools in East Detroit, Michigan. In eighth grade I set a personal goal to attend the University of Michigan. I never had private tutors. My strongest subject is math. Mr Learmont, my junior high school history teacher would frequently say, "Take care of these books and these books will take care of you." It was that inspiration that raised me to love learning and in turn teaching others.
Thomas Edison said, "Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. I am extremely persistant. Whatever it takes to get someone to understand a concept I will strive to discover it. Most of all the process of learning should be kept exciting so that the pupil is left yearning for the next lesson.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have recently graduated from Lawrence Technological University with a BA in graphic design, although all of my work experience has been with children. I started this experience in high school, as a teacher aide to a third grade class, creating lesson plans and working one-on-one. I have tutored in a professional tutoring center and privately for over 7 years working with children of all ages. The subjects I tutor include pre-calculus, advanced algebra, geometry, chemistry, biology, reading and English which I taught to kindergarten through college-level students. In the past year I have started substitute teaching at a private school for gifted children. I have gained valuable experience from this position, learning new teaching styles gaining a new perspective in my approach to teaching.
I have been tutoring for many years and enjoy the experience. While working at a tutor ... read more

Many people have different teaching skills and techniques. I do not believe any technique to educate a child is better than any other technique. Each child learns differently. Understanding the fact that children learn differently is crucial. The teacher must be able to adapt to the child's learning style. I believe I have the ability to use an array of teaching styles to help children. I would enjoy the opportunity to help children learn.
As a student at the University of Detroit Mercy, I worked as a tutor for two years. I helped other students struggling in mathematics and biology classes. Also, my senior year in college I worked as a Teaching Assistant for a Microbiolgy lab. In addition, I did student teaching for a Catholic Middle School.

I graduated from Michigan Technological University in December 2010 where I earned a BS in Mathematical Sciences. I have learned much about the nature of math and how students learn it. I am in process of receiving my teaching certification from the State of Michigan. For the last 4 years, I tutored college students in math. The past two years I tutored middle school students in science and math. I recently finished my student teaching in a middle school classroom.
I love helping and working with learners of all ages. I believe that everyone has something to learn and that it is a continuous process. I am patient, goal-driven, and understanding. My goal is to help you master the concepts. I want you to be able to discover a concept or big idea for yourself and then expand on that so you can explain it to me multiple ways. While I was going to school I became a student tutor in the areas of calculus, physics and chemistry. Most were just help with the basic calculations and the understanding of simple fundamentals.
My teaching style is very unique because I tend to simplify the understanding process of mathematical analysis. I feel that I can teach anyone from 1st grade up to the college level. But I never do the problems for the student. Instead, I guide them through the problem so the student will learn first hand how to solve calculations step by step.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am used to teaching both students close to my age and students younger than I. I always try to explain ideas in ways that make the student think. I never like to hand answers to students, so I do my best at having students learn in their own way with someone helping them along. Being a virtuoso, I believe practice makes perfect in every subject. The way to best understand something new is to review it and practice it. I have a substantial amount of patience when it comes to teaching. I am also a very generous, kind, and humorous person who has learned to live life to its fullest. I work hard at making friends with everyone I meet everywhere, and I believe your best friend can also be your greatest influence in learning.

A Little Bit About Me...

All students can learn, but they have different learning styles. Identifying a student's strengths and weaknesses is a key step in the learning process. Whatever their particular style is, students learn best in a positive learning environment which ideally will include the following elements: positive reinforcement, a regular study plan, parental support, and a quiet environment. I have found that another key is to give the student some degree of ownership over what they learn by turning more of the responsibility for framing questions and summarizing what they have learned over to them. One way to make this work is to activate their prior learning. We learn much more of what we do than what we hear. I have a passion for learning and am not ashamed to say that I am still learning. This passion for learning can be contagious.

I believe that assessment of a child's skills should drive the teacher's instruction. Every child should receive instruction that meets their individual needs. I believe that I inspire children to want to learn more and to explore freely. I demonstrate an enthusiasm towards teaching that my students respond to, and produces eager learners.
I have been a kindergarten teacher for the last eight years. I differentiate my instruction to meet the needs of all children. As a result, my students conclude their kindergarten experience with reading and math skills at or above grade level expectations. Also, I focus on learning activities that foster the child's character and conflict resolution skills. Children demonstrate appropriate behaviors and coping skills amongst their peers. I also believe that fostering a child's fine and gross motor skills is of the utmost importance. I u ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I began officially tutoring four years ago, starting up a private tutoring business. Through it, I have taught ages 5 through 55 in nearly all subjects, including mathematics, science, physics, ACT, and English. I also have tutored publicly at Oakland University for one year, where I earned my tutoring certification (level 1).
My passion is in watching others to succeed, and I am willing to change my own methods to make that happen. Thus, my tutoring style depends almost entirely on the student as I have found that the most common reason a tutor is needed is that the student's learning style does not match with the teacher's teaching style. I can tutor through examples, visually drawing concepts, talking, describing the reasons behind a concept, and most importantly, I can relate almost every subject to daily life.
