My comments on tutoring Organic Chemistry : I hold a Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences degree in Medicinal and Biological Chemistry from the University of Toledo. My major required me to take over 20 hours of chemistry electives, half of which were organic chemistry courses. I am well-versed in reaction mechanisms, stereochemistry and isomers, properties of the various functional groups, and molecular nomenclature.

Since graduating from The University of Toledo in 2011, I have worked at a local pharmaceutical company as a chemist. I never give away answers and instead try to lead the student toward the answer, giving them the chance to figure it out as we go along. I try to break more complex ideas down into concepts that are easier to understand. I often tell students that Chemistry is not as scary as some people say, it just needs to be explained properly.

How I was trained to tutor students was to have them explain the material to me, instead of giving blatant answers, or if we don't know we could review the textbook, the notes, or look it up in another resource. A Little Bit About Me...

When a question is asked, I am not going to simply just tell the student the answer. I would want them to think it out and try and figure it out for themselves. I would however guide them in the right direction and even ask them other questions they may know in order for them to figure out the intial problem. I feel that these types of interactions are a more effective way of learning. Also, writing things down helps tremedously because not only are you thinking it, but you're seeing it and reading it as well.
