I love learning math and science and I enjoy sharing the same love of learning with my students. I like seeing the look on their face when they really get it! Students requiring tutoring are sometimes in academic distress and have anxiety therefore I have a more easy going and patient style of tutoring than most. I believe I'm an effective tutor because I remember the exact same difficulties and questions I had as a student and can relate to their frustration. Most people as well as myself are visual learners thus I teach by working several examples and gradually increasing the difficulty at a pace set by the student. I would rather spend a whole tutoring session working a few examples the student completely understands as opposed to several problems with no understanding. The goal is to slowly establish a pattern of success with simpler work then before the student realizes it they're o ... read more

For over four years, I have been involved in private tutoring as well as teaching classes available to the public. I have a passion for teaching and enjoy helping others succeed. While completing my Bachelors in Business Administration, I developed a firm understanding and passion for economics, finance, and accounting. My work experience, in banking and in organizational management, has provided me with opportunity to apply this knowledge in real life situations.
I enjoy teaching and working with children and adults. My first experience in education was with children's music classes, and have since enjoyed the opportunity to teach adults at the community college level. I would describe my style as adaptive. In my experience every child and adult requires somewhat of a different approach. After careful evaluation, a course is developed to meet the students needs. With that ... read more

The best way to describe my teaching style is to find a creative way to remember material. For example, I have a child that had to memorize his prepositions. We made up a song that included them all, in order. It turned out to something like this....ABOARD a ship AS we were traveling ABOUT eight knots, etc. This style was very effective for memorizing. For subjects that require more understanding than memorizing, I prefer my "teach and try" method. This means that I go through multiple problems with a student explaining the steps involved. Then, I set-up a mock test to test their abilities solo. I therefore can grasp their understanding and pinpoint their weaknesses.

I began tutoring formally in high school for sibling's friends who needed assistance in all subjects. When the opportunity arose to help my alma mater, I took the change to teach debate, public speaking, political science, and advise college level students. I've tutored students in English as I was former major in college as well as nearly every social science subject you can think of. I've also taught multiple sections of study skills courses.
Both of my parents were teachers so it is in my blood. I am a firm believer in finding the right way to convey information to anyone, especially your student. My goal was always to confer the desire to learn no matter the subject. I remember the teachers who were passionate for their subjects and seek to emulate their expertise as much as possible in an environment that holds that students can learn pretty much anything they put their mind ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I do believe that everyone has a different way of learning. Some students need more visual instruction, especially the younger learner or the learner that may have been away from school for a period of time. Some like to work on their own but be guided by instruction, review, question and answer and timed testing to insure that they have mastered a lesson. I do enjoy taking the individual time to talk to students and find out what makes them tic. That is the starting point to build confidence and also repoire with the student.

A Little Bit About Me...

While working with at risk students, I was faced with challenges that ranged from behavioral, health, educational, as well as family dynamics. With that experience I have learned to be fluid with your teaching approaches with the students. During my time with the students I noticed that some were able to learn by a verbal approach and others were more visual. In spite of the approach I noticed that it was important that you hold the attention of the child by making it exciting as well as be patient and considerate of their feelings.

Many teachers will say the same thing, that they love teaching and it is only outside factors that will disrupt a class and make it difficult for some students to learn. I delight in helping students to acquire new knowledge and there is satisfaction in having students thank the teacher after a class. I like to work with small groups and encourage these groups to explore and teach each other from my leading. Sometimes however, extraneous issues prevent students from learning adequately at school and I welcome the opportunity to supplement this education with one on one or group tutoring.

I really enjoy working with students. My teaching philosophy is that all children can learn. I subscribe to the constructivism approach to teaching. This is where students scaffold their own knowledge from other experiences. I believe that if you can get a student interested in something they are more likely to enjoy what they are learning about and are more likely to be successful. I am cheerful, kind and enthusiastic which I also feel help encourage students to be successful learners.
