In the past five years I have had experience teaching music to children from ages five through high school. During this time I have had many different students with different needs. I have always tried to teach my students to have a strong work ethic, and to be independent learners. My teaching style is to discover what each student needs to learn in order to be successful. I teach in a way that is most effective with that student. I have found that students can make rapid progress when they have an opportunity to fill in the gaps of their skills and knowledge. Over the years, I have learned many strategies to help students acquire the skills they need. I help students to build on their strengths as they overcome their academic weaknesses. I have also learned that students learn more quickly when the lesson is interesting to them, so I choose reading material for a lesson with that in mind. After graduating from the University of Missouri - Columbia with a BS in Mathematics and a BSEd in Secondary Mathematics Education, I have had several opportunities as both classroom teacher and individual tutor for students ranging from middle school through college aged. Having recently returned from studying translation in Nairobi, Kenya, I have a part-time high school mathematics teaching position currently.
