Teacher Who Can Teach Any Student!

Taught in Greenwood and Greenville county schools 12 years. I taught reading recovery, resource, and self contained classrooms. Before that I was an ABA line therapist for students with autism. I have a degree in Elementary Education with a specialization in Special Education. I am certified as a Elementary and Special Education teacher through the SC state Department of Education. I now own my own tutoring business Shining Stars Tutoring LLC.
I do not ever yell or scare my students into behaving the way I have seen many teachers do. With many students this does not work. I respect my students and in turn they respect me. This creates an atmosphere where students want to behave for me.

I am a very hands-on teacher. I try to help students by showing them how it is done and then letting them practice.
I have experience in all of the fields that are listed. Most of the skills I have acquired were either through learning them during my time at school or through doing personal research because they interested me. I have done some tutoring in the computer/i.t field as a side job. Chess has been one of my favorite things to learn. My experience with chess has been a regional tournament where I made it to the last-round of the semi-finals.

Education, teaching in particular, gives individuals the opportunity to give back what they have received. It is communication on a broader level than just simply putting forth information to whomever chooses to accept it. I started my career in education before I set foot on a college campus, through a peer-tutoring program in my high school. This experience allowed me to work with severely disabled peers learning functional skills for independence. Since then I have worked as an aide in emotional/behavior and multiple-disability middle school classrooms, as well as LD-resource, ED self contained and SC occupational diploma program. In addition I have earned a degree of distinction with the National Forensic League, been name a scholar-athlete in South Carolina and a host of other accolades in scholarship. I have experienced both urban and suburban school settings and have had inc ... read more

Wildly Experienced Writing and All-Around English Tutor

Relaxed but exacting.
I have tutored writing at the college level since 1985 when I finished a formal course in tutoring methods. Since then, I have tutored writing and other subjects for people as young as 12 through college-age. For 15 years, I also taught college writing courses including basic writing, English composition, research composition, creative writing, and advanced poetry writing. I am the recipient of a Nation/Discovery award for poetry, and my poems have appeared in many literary magazines and some anthologies. I recently put out a novel. Additionally, I scored 198 out of 200 on the literature Praxis examination, which is a national teacher certification exam. In addition to teaching writing, I ran an interdisciplinary learning center for 11 years. There, I hired, trained and supervised tutors in many disciplines--usually at least 90 per semester. My comments on tutoring Poetry : I have taught poetry in grades 7-12 and on the university level.

Student centered instruction is the approach I use in my instruction. That means that the student's needs and learning style direct the way the information will be delivered and activities that will guide the learning. Students learn best by doing, so I only lecture for small amounts of time.
I have taught for 12 years in both a private and public school in Greenville, SC. I am currently teaching at Anderson University but in the classroom and on-line. In grades 7-12 I have taught English literature and writing as well as drama courses. At Anderson University I teach English 101, 102, and 205.

Originally trained as a teacher of Drama and English, I subsequently spent many years working in the theatre, not only in educational situations but also as an actor, director and writer. I am now semi-retired, but still enjoy working as a teacher, and I currently teach animation and drama. I would welcome the opportunity to do some tutoring in language skills.
I have always found that the first and often most important thing a teacher can do is find the obstacles to learning that we all suffer from and seek ways to remove them. These may be the so called "blocks" that may develop after negative early experiences, preconceptions about the subject, or simply lack of confidence. Replacing resistance with enthusiasm and interest, and then providing expert guidance can then lead to acheivement.

More About This Tutor...

I recently finished my BS in English Literature at Towson University in Maryland. In the years I spent at Towson, I built a portfolio to include samples of my writing. I am interested in helping others build their writing skills to communicate creatively and effectively.
I enjoy helping students build on their strengths and overcome weaknesses in writing. I believe the key to a stimulating composition stems from the interest the writer has in the subject. Equally important is technical aspect of writing. Using a subject of interest to apply the rules of writing is the best way to shake writer's block and increase a student's comfort in English composition.

A Little Bit About Me...

My background consists of more than twenty years in the accounting field. Currently, I work as a payroll, accounts payable and general ledger accountant for a nonprofit organization in downtown Greenville. Some people wonder why an accountant would have an English degree. Well, English majors make great accountants because they possess excellent analytical and conscientious problem-solving skills. Last year, I worked as an English and math tutor for the No Child Left Behind Program and was thrilled to watch my students improve two or more grade levels.
As a tutor, I find it very important to display compassion and patience as I help my students understand their subject. If the student does not understand a particular aspect of a subject, we work on that aspect until clarity is achieved. Each individual possesses his or her own, unique learning style. I have found that appl ... read more
