I am patient, go at the students level, and believe in the use various types of visual aids and hands on to keep my students engaged. Students learn and retain information quicker with continual repetition; however each student will grasp the information different from another and some will take more repetition than others.
I have been working with special needs students with various disabilities for 10 years. I have worked with students ranging from ADHD/ADD to those who are bed ridded and need toileting assistance. I have also had to accommodate with feeding and those who are transitioning out of high school. I can teach students how to read and write and how to ride the city but to where they need to go and make it back home. I have also taught cooking and hygiene skills.

The method of teaching I prefer is maieutic, i.e., one which draws knowledge from the student, rather than attempts to place it in him/her from without. To me, the process of asking questions and allowing the student's curiosity and intelligence to reach conclusions is far more effective than one-sided lecturing. I have had the unique opportunity throughout college to tutor in various areas. I was very active within a vocal performance group and had the opportunity to assist in public speaking venues frequently. Upon graduating from college, I began teaching as a music teacher for one year and then a middle school band director for three years in Talladega, Alabama. Upon moving to Georgia in 1977, I began teaching music and third grade classes in a primary school in Villa Rica, Georgia.
