My philosophy is to first cut through the jargon than frequently confuses students. Often the underlying concept is easy to grasp, but has been made unnecessarily difficult because the text or teacher has used terminology that is confusing. This is particularly true in the field of mathematics. The writer, instructor or academic will begin by using a term which is ambiguous or has not been explained. The other principle that is important in mathematics is active participation by the student. To fully grasp the subject requires practice working problems. As the student solves more problems, he or she will gain more confidence and greater familiarity with the subject. I excelled in mathematics at the Naval Academy. Frequently, I provided help to my classmates as an informal tutor. At the conclusion of two and a half years of study, I was ranked 7th in my class in mathematics.
