Social Studies and Creative Writing (English)

I am currently a Sociology student at Augsburg College. I am also pursuing a minor in Psychology. This year will be my last, so I will graduate in 2014. Also, I have taken several creative writing courses at the Loft Literary center, as well as at my College. I received a 4.0 in my courses. Also, in high school, I was always a level above in all English and composition classes.
I like to challenge people to think outside of the box. Although I know it is important to know how to take tests and write papers appropriately, I also know that showing skills that go above and beyond, is what makes a student stand out. My teaching style is, for the most part, non-directive. I think it is important to try to have students answer their own questions. When this does not work, I do not just tell the student what goes where or why this doesn't work, I give reasons and have them tell me these same reasons the next time we come across something that doesn't work.
At SCSU, I work as a writing consultant at the Writing Center on campus. With students, I help to make them better writers by helping answer questions, presenting questions, working through the brainstorming and paper-writing process, and helping with formatting. I began my college career in the Institute of Technology at the University of Minnesota. During my five semesters in the program I was able to study calculus and physics. I am familiar with high school level physics and mathematics up to and including pre-calculus. After five semesters at the University I transferred to St. Cloud State University to study economics. Teaching needs to adjust with each student or class, because everyone has their own flavor for learning. I tend to let the student take the lead at first, and then I try to guide them through the areas they're questioning. It's like a car on a road with a new driver: the student is driving all over the road, and I need to gently urge them into the right lane (or the correct answer). I also like to use real world examples when I can from my past experience, and encourage the student to do so as well.

As a recent graduated of the University of Minnesota-Duluth I am a very motivated and energetic person. I earned a 4 year degree in 3 1/2 by taking college level classes in high school and taking extra classes each semester.
