A Little Bit About Me...

I'm a fifth-teen year old, currently enrolled at Thomas J. Corcoran High School, where I am a sophomore I currently take IB classes and wanted to start tutoring to pass the time and pick up a little extra cash. I'm drug free and have never tasted alcohol. I try to be patient and usually am. I'd prefer to work with children still in elementary or middle school, seeing as I haven't learned everything yet. I know the basic and more to just about everything eighth grade and below. Typically the setting in which the tutoring will take place will be my house in my dining room area and after that the student may watch television until his or her parent or guardian is there to pick them up.

LESSONS SHOULD ACCOMMODATE STUDENT LEARNING STYLES

I have 15 years of teaching experience with special needs students in a rural school district. During this time i provided private tutoring sessions for Elementary, Middle, High School and College students. At the college level my tutoring experience is with reading, writing, study skills and organization. Currently I develop educational programming for incarcerated youth.
My belief is that all students have different learning styles. Therefore lessons need to be individualized to meet student needs. In order to be successful students need to be engaged by creative teachers. My teaching experience has taught me to accommodate these needs when developing lesson plans.

A Little Bit About Me...

Before I was able to tutor, I taught 7 year old girls cheerleading. When I began to tutor, I enjoyed being one on one with the child. I am very patient, punctual and considerate. I know children that need extra help need extra time. I find it personally rewarding to supplament a child's education. I also believe it is easier for a child to ask questions when they are one on one with an educator.
Beginning in high school I found myself driven to help children in need. Through my participation in Mercy Action, I raised money for mentally delayed children, and set up numerous barbeques for them. Later, I began tutoring a young brazilian boy in the 5th grade. He needed help with all of his studies, especially math and english. As a political science major, I have gained experienced in essay writing, grammatical skills and research methods.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style will vary depending on the class as a whole or the type of student I am working with individually. In order to be an effective teacher I have seen that I need to be flexible with how I present material to a student. If a student is visual I am able to create diagrams and use props to show a concept rather than only speak the material. Some students need hands on and things like manipulatives in math help create a concrete way to remember a concept, and this is also something I do. In my mind success as a teacher is largely based on the success of the student and I am able to figure out what a specific child needs and adjust my teaching style to that student.
In 2006 I completed my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education with concentrations in History and English. In 2008 I received my New York State Teaching Certificate. Starting at the end of 2008 I became a su ... read more

“ All kids learn, but not in the same way and not on the same day”. This quote was introduced to me during student teaching, and has constantly come up in my mind whenever working with children. I have learned that the only thing students have in common when in school is there grade level status. A teacher may teach a first grade classroom, but all of those students grasp concepts at different times, and need multiple options to master the curriculum they are exposed to. It requires dedication and passion, but I believe a teacher who truly differentiates and refers to the multiple intelligences is a true educator.
In my education core classes I succeeded with an overall GPA between a 3.5-3.8. I was completely engaged in all of my education classes and I was always interested in the material I was learning about. I knew once I was in my education classes that education was the right ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been employed for over 11 years, in a K-5 Elementary School, teaching reading to low-achieving students. I have my permanent New York State Teacher Certification. I have privately tutored many students, grades K-5, in the subject areas of reading and math. I am familiar with the Everyday Math curriculum. As an N-6 Teacher, I am qualified to tutor all elementary-level subjects.
I believe that every student has the potential to learn and grow. I strive to combine a variety of materials and experiences in my tutoring that holds students' interest. I believe that it is important to give students who might be struggling, extra help, as early as possible, enabling them to achieve as they progress through school. A 1:1 experience can be critical in allowing a student to reach their full potential.

More About This Tutor...

I really enjoy teaching and working with people of all ages. I believe everyone is able to grasp the concept of math and science when taught effectively and with patience. I am a very easy going and friendly person, and I have been told I explain things with enough detail to understand, but not too much to bog down the information. I am a firm believer in teaching through fun riddles and games, and always relating the problem back to the student's personal life, hobbies, etc. I honestly believe everyone is able to be great at math and science, and a great educator will make a world of difference in pursuing the sciences.

I recognize the importance of a dynamic teaching style- one that adjusts depending on both the subject matter and the student. I am very experienced with addressing procrastination and anxiety. A patient, encouraging, and directed atmosphere is a great aid in learning. A Little Bit About Me...

Because I was a "non-tradional" student, one with my own children, I knew several things from the start: first and foremost, I will always treat students the way I wish my own children are treated by their teachers. In addtion, I have an understanding that not all children, nor adults, learn the same and need to be offered a variety of experiences. My teaching style is one of a facilitator. I want to be the one delivery the lesson, modeling what our learning targets are, and allowing the students to achieve the goals based on the new information given.
I have taught now for 5 years. 6th grade for 2, 5th grade for 2, and tutored as well as substitute taught for several districts in the area.
