My public speaking class is extremely participatory, both so students can gain experience speaking in front of an audience and because this format seems to keep students more interested in the material. My experience teaching children in theatre was also very participatory. I believe that students learn best when they can understand a given concept from several different angles. In problem based courses this is usually done through asking the student what they think the next step should be and guiding them through the process of problem solving. Once they start to understand problem solving then they do not only improve in the course that I am tutoring them in but in their other courses as well. I worked at LearningRX as a cognitive skills trainer where I worked with students who were having difficulty in school and I was able to find their areas of difficulty and help build those areas up while also helping with their memory, visual acuity, and processing speed.
I like to have a relationship with the students I tutored where they feel comfortable with me; I want them to be able to tell me the problems they're having with the work and what I can do to help. I like to be friendly with them while still being an authority figure where they want to do their best. I always use concrete examples that students can relate to when explaining a concept.
