I like to make the classes a lot of fun, with a lot of laughter, because I realised when I was still in high school that the fun classes stayed in my mind and I learned more in them. I also tend to befriend my students, against the conventional wisdom that there should be a wall between. If they are relaxed and can trust me, they will also learn better. I have lived in Japan now for 27 years. I am planning to return to the U.S. in April. I have and am currently teaching in 23 locations with upwards of 34 classes/lessons per week. After earning my doctorate in math in 1966, I began teaching at the University of Massachusetts as an assistant professor of math. I was promoted to associate professor in 1972, and continued there until 1977. In 1977 I moved to South Bend to join a Christian community there. I taught part-time at Notre Dame, St. Mary's and IUSB. In 1981 my community started Trinity School, and I taught there from 1981 until I retired in 2007. In 2008 I decided to do missionary work with a group in Indianapolis, and did some tutoring at IUPUI. Last Feb. we moved to Evansville. Last summer I tutored at Ivy Tech . I work hard at leading students to figure things out for themselves. But if they get too frustrated, I will spell things out more in detail. From my experience I found that the process of working side by side with my student as they strive to figure out a problem or grasp a concept is what I most enjoy about tutoring. As a person I am patient, responsible, and encouraging. I enjoy being creative to help meet my students’ learning styles and needs, and I know how to prioritize learning tasks to help students focus. Also, I recognize that success and progress are individual to a student and their abilities. The focus will be for the student to get the most out of what they are learning, and along the way to acquire a love for learning itself.
