I often use word games or riddles as rewards for good work. It motivates effort from my students and makes them listen more closely. With my esl students, I made sure to apply new words to their life in order to gain the most retention of the new vocabulary words. The approach I use of ask students to draw from their own lives in order to illustrate meaning and comprehension encourages a dailogue that works well with any vocabulary words for any age group.

When they get stuck, I ask them questions to point them in the right direction, but I almost never give them the answer unless a lot of time would be wasted otherwise. I'm also very good at catching mistakes, but instead of pointing them out right away, I usually also ask them leading questions to help them find the mistake on their own.
