I worked in California for one year as a substitute teacher; I worked for three years in a Christian School first in a 3-4 combination, then a 5-6 combination, then a 4-5 combination. I then moved on to tutoring. My first year was with Sylvan Learning Center, then with a private tutoring group, One to One Learning Center in Santa Rosa, CA. for six years. From 1997 to 2001, I was a software trainer in Ft. Lauderdale Florida for corporations and as a selfcontractor. I moved to Naples and finished my BS degree in Management in the spring 2005 and starting Substitute teaching in the fall of 2005 (I taught Governement, American History,Economics, Marketing, Psychology and Sociology). I took the SAE in social science and passed in June 2006 and the SAE in Markeing in April 2007 and passed. I like to teach by example and immersion. So much of what schools preach today is rote memorization, and to a certain degree, this cannot be avoided. But whenever possible, I like to try and find real world applications and demonstrations to get my lessons across to my pupil.
Throughout high school and college, I've always excelled in my school work. I was president of the math club and often tutored my peers during my spare time. The University of Florida has provided me with a well rounded education, and I feel myself knowledgable in many areas, from languages like french, spanish and hindi, to the sciences like chemistry, biology, and physics. I believe the first step is to always ascertain where a student is in their comprehension of the subject and what their propensity is to learn (i.e. quick learner, learns by examples etc.). That gives me an idea of how fast/slow to go and how best to get to cement actual learning. Generally, I like to get the student to arrive at answers by asking pointed questions so that their minds can understand the process versus simply memorizing the answers. I also believe in providing both positive feedback as well as constructive criticism where needed.
I have always been fascinated by numbers and how the analysis of numbers can be used in nearly everything we do. I have 25+ years experience in most aspects of Computer Science. I am currently a Senior Systems Analyst at Fidelity Investments, Boston Mass, and have been working there since 1981. I was an independent Cousultant developing and implementing computer-based systems for 10 years prior. I was a volunteer Mathematics tutor at my daughters Elementary School for 2 years.
