I find that each person has a different learing style and try to find out what works for them. I also teach them that organization of thoughts and ideas are helpful in how they approach learning. I relate the subject matter to what is needed to learn and to something that they can relate to. My own learning style is a combination of visual and auditory, which has led me to believe flexibility is key. There is no one “best” method which works for all students, so my primary job is to help the student teach me the way he or she learns best. My aim in tutoring, regardless of learning style, is to increase understanding to a point where my student can not only perform the desired action, but also “teach” the concept back to me without assistance. I believe once mastery of a concept has reached this point, it forms a solid, lasting foundation for the next one. Just as I am bringing up my children to be independent adults, my goal for my students is to help them gain methods of learning so that my services are no longer needed.
