My comments on tutoring Life Science : I hold a Ph.D in a Life Science discipline.

I took a variety of Biology classes and Labs at WPI mostly focused on Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics. I recently finished my PH.D. where I studied control of viral gene expression. This work encompassed a variety of biological disciplines including virology, cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and molecular genetics, all of which I am quite experienced in. I also have experience teaching in a seminar format as well as in small groups. As a senior graduate student I was responsible for leading discussions prior to invited speaker seminars.
I believe that stimulating conversation and allowing people to arrive at answers on their own and through experience is the best way to form lasting connections.

Although I have taught, coached and tutored aorking professionals I only have one year experience actually teaching. Since I have been unemployed (July, 2008)I have been volunteering in a bilingual second grade at Hill Central Music Academy in New Haven, CT
I understand that children (and adults) have differennt learning styles and try to tailor my approach to the specific needs of the student. The bilingual students I teach have a unique challenge in that the letters of the alphabet represent different sounds in English versus Spanish. Teaching Style- That is an interesting question- since there are so many schools with so many different teaching methods I would like to see how the student was shown the particular method for "attack". It would also be helpful to compare that to the textbook directions; from there I will be able to develop a plan based on the topic and the individual student. I have had to recreate lessons for my son for years in order to develop a style that he understands. The student may have an idea for creatively learning this topic- I am always open to suggestions.
