Don't risk your grade/money on mere paper qualifications

You will see many ads by former or current professors trying to make a buck on the side. They are terrible tutors - they spent their whole careers having students beg them for a better grade. I have spent my whole life learning how to explain the most complex concepts to absolutely anybody. You will also see many people touting a related professional position as qualification. Many of them got their positions through nepotism and cheating to get paper qualifications (Some are my former clients) and neither have a good understanding of the material nor do they explain things well. My teaching style is tailored to the individual. The first thing I do when I'm trying to teach someone something is determine their learning style. If they don't know it I help them figure it out. I do find that most people learn best by diving in and doing it themselves first, while I serve as a "safety net". Whenever I was teaching new helmsmen or junior officers how to steer survey lines, I would direct them how to do it the first few times, and then when they felt ready to try it themselves, I stood back and let them, not stepping in until the absolute last second. Letting them make and try to correct their own mistakes seemed to be the best teaching tool I had.

I had an amazing biology teacher in high school who was upbeat, interactive and made learning, memorable and fun. I try to take this same approach myself to figure out what is important to students and play on their interests and strengths to help them learn. I typically try a couple of different styles, like flash card memorization, word association (sometimes seemingly unrelated but the funnier and more obscure they are, tend to stick in the memory better), picture association, etc. Having effective discussions about subject matters, particularly with difficult topics, can help the student gain a more in depth understanding.
