A Little Bit About Me...

I propone an exploratory, learn-by-doing philosophy regarding education; I believe that students are best served producing their own inquiries (guided by an educator), and then seeking resolution through gathering information. Nevertheless, all students learn differently and I pride my ability to adapt to certain situations and provide the healthiest learning environment for my students that I can.
I've been informally teaching for around 7 years, starting with private percussion lessons and high school drumline instruction and most recently tutoring through the Migrant Education Program in the subject areas of English as a Second Language, math, science, and Spanish. I am a current Geography Teacher Education student at Illinois State University minoring in Spanish. I will receive my license after completing my student teaching requirement in the spring of 2015.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is one which engages the student actively in the learning process. I have used the "popcorn" technique in a classroom, where I call out "popcorn", then call on someone at random. This ensures that each student in the class is following, or else they lose their turn to read. If I'm working w/ a student w/ poor reading skills, I allow them to read, and help them w/ the difficult words, encouraging them to sound out the word. I also try to engage models, and kinestetics, in the learning process. One picture=1,000 words, and one model = 1,000 pictures. I also use these techniques in teaching mathematics.

A Little Bit About Me...

While I like students to know that I am an expert in my subject field, I also want them to take the opportunity to learn critical thinking skills. I want them to gather information, ask questions and break things down to a level that makes sense for them. A Little Bit About Me...

As a student-athlete at Illinois State University, I learned many invaluable skills. I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Physics as well as minors in both Mathematics and Exercise Science. Earning this degree as well as two minors has allowed me to gain a large amount of knowledge in both science and math. Being a student-athlete also taught me great leadership, hard work, teaching and time management skills. In my final year at Illinois State University, I taught a physics lab course.
