I believe that every student has the privilege and desire to reach his/her learning potential and that there are many different techniques and strategies to help them reach that potential. I believe that a hands-on approach to learning is best - in all subject areas. I have a great deal of experience working with students of various ages and learning styles. I will strive to help any student that I work with gain knowledge and be able to apply that knowledge in their schooling and everyday life.
I graduated from the University of Iowa in 1989. My degree is in Elementary Education with an emphasis in reading. I taught in the same school district for 20 years where I gained experience teaching first, second, third and sixth grade. Children all learn different, which is why I believe in using direct instruction in guiding their learning. Some children are more visual learns, while others may be more auditory. Varying the levels of teaching can allow for each child's needs to be met. I feel that I am able to adapt and change what I need to teach to meet those needs. I also believe scaffolding is a key component in guiding the way a child is able to learn. Along with scaffolding, providing the experiences and opportunities for a child is very important in helping them to reach their full potential. I hope to make a difference in the lives of the children that I get to be a part of.
