As a tutor, I find that it is important to present the material to the students in a way that they can relate to. My job as an educator is to teach them how to learn it and make them want to learn it. I personally do not believe that negative reinforcement is beneficial. Positive responses to students are extremely valuable, even if they may occasionally give the wrong answer. This will give them the motivation to do well. For 20 years I worked for Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools, as a fifth through 7th Grade classroom teacher. I taught all of the academic subjects in various combinations, sometimes all at once to a self-contained class. The State of Tennessee recognized me as "Highly Qualified" in all subjects, from Kindergarten through 8th Grade. I served on the district's math council for 5 years, helped direct the district's science fair one year, and worked extensively in the field of arts-based curriculum development. I believe in teaching by example. I know especially in chemistry, examples help see the proper technique and variables needed to solve the problem. I feel that if a student is memorizing an equation but does not understand the process of finding and filling in variables, this will not help them get to the correct answer. A student need to dissect the equation in order to understand what exactly a problem is looking for. It took me many year to understand this process, but once I did I found that I could solve almost any problem that was presented to me in the field of chemistry.
