I graduated from Arkansas State University in 1974 and taught third grade for seven and a half years, then moved to another town and taught 5th grade resource for six years. I relocated to Tennessee and taught high school special education for seven years. After deciding that I enjoyed teaching younger children, I transferred to Cheatham Middle School, where I presently teach fifth grade inclusion. I taught summner school for several years, as well as doing homebound education for Cheatham County. I have also worked for A to Z Tuoring. A Little Bit About Me...

As the daughter of educators, I have been exposed to the education system all my life. As a result of this exposure, I became very interested in tutoring and teaching. I taught for two years as a substitute teacher before attending law school. I previously worked as a substitute teacher with Morrow Elementary in North Lauderdale, Florida where I taught test-taking strategies for the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. Most recently, I have volunteered with Youth Encouragement services as a tutor.
Based on previous experience I have discovered that the same teaching style does not work for every child. I find that explaining each topic and asking the child question gives a clear indication of their understanding. Based on responses to the questions adjustments may be made to address each child's need.

As an English major at the University of Florida, I found a love for language learning and language acquisition; as a result, I declared Linguistics and TESL as additional majors. In these majors, I became quit ept at understanding grammatical principles and language learning theory. I began volunteering my knowledge to foreign language learners and found that I loved helping others learn. After receiving my BA, I began teaching writing and reading to native and non-native speakers at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, FL. In the classroom, I believe the collaborative approach is the best method for teaching. For impactful learning to occur, students must be directly and actively involved in their learning. This can be done through group work, group activities, and class discussion. This approach is also best for tutoring. To be a good tutor, one must know how to best engage the tutee in the learning process. It is not enough to simply provide information; this can be accomplished simply by reading a book. A good tutor must put theory and knowledge into practice for the tutee to progresses as a student.
