My experience suggests that students must participate to fully benefit from the teaching and learning experience. This implies that they must be interested in the subject. Therefore it is, in part, the teacher's role to engage the students and guide them in a manner that engenders their interest. Beyond this I have found that students respond best when their strengths are recognized and their efforts rewarded. I believe that each student learns in their own unique fashion. When I work one on one with a student, I first talk with them (and look at previous writing samples) to try and determine how best to tutor them. Some students benefit if I hide their papers and ask them to talk their way through the main points and arguments of their essays (and then compare and contrast what they said to me to their actual arguments in their paper to see if information has been left out or if there is excess information), and others benefit from reading their paper out loud to catch errors or awkward phrasing.

I am a very patient listener and think that I empathize well with everyone. While student teaching I learned to pay attention to all of the students in a very diverse student body. I chose texts from a variety of backgrounds- the multicultural approach was both ideal and necessary in that setting. I then emphasized the similarities between the texts and the need for standardization in language use. One method which succeeded was my attempt to improve the students' vocabularies by breaking words into their most basic components; they learned to define words which they might not otherwise have recognized.
