As a recreation major, I have held a number of jobs working with children of all ages. My first job as a lifeguard and swim instructor helped me understand how to work with children ages three to fifteen and really get a feel for how their brains operate and the proper learning styles to use for each age. Moving on to my job as a camp counselor and staff member at 4-H Memorial Camp in Monticello I really started to familiarize myself with young adults and the way they behave in different settings.
I am a very laid-back, out going person but I never stray from the main goal at hand. I strive to help educate children the best way possible, and would like to make a difference in their life. To me, learning is best exemplified by an engaged and interested student asking informed and critical questions of the material assigned. I believe that students are more apt to achieve such education in a relaxed atmosphere. As the instructor, I may know more than the student(s), but this does not necessarily imply that I am the more insightful or intelligent person. Therefore, I encourage my student(s) to question myself and their peers, to not accept history at face value, and to not view historical study as a series of “facts” that are dictated to passive students as “truth.” My role as teacher is that of facilitator; I am there to provide the historical context and skills necessary for generating such critical assessments.
