My comments on tutoring Pre-Algebra : Currently teaching this class.

I have worked with students of all ages. I have taught elementary all the way to college level students. I have taught basic math, algebra, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus and SAT math. I graduated from electrical engineering school. I understand what it takes to bring students up to speed. Over the years I have learned that students did not understand the subject because they did not master the basics. Math is like solving the puzzle, one has to master the previous course before moving on to the next.

A Little Bit About Me...

Statement of Teaching Style I feel that all learners should have access to the highest quality education possible. The object of education is to provide each student with the tools that will help them develop their individual talents. All students should be given an opportunity in a safe educational setting to demonstrate their talents. This opportunity also means giving every student a chance to show their full potential. Instructors must have a pleasant and enthusiastic attitude. Instructors must be accepting of all students regardless of ethnic background or other personal factors. An instructor should use a variety of instructional methods and delivery techniques to facilitate the learning process.

As I come from a family of educators, I believe teaching is in my blood. I am a product of a “learn by doing” university education and naturally, use this philosophy when tutoring. However, I believe I also blend-in an appropriate amount of theory so an understanding of the concept being taught can be applied to similar problems. Using a relaxed and patient approach, I enjoy sharing my knowledge with my students and helping them reach their learning potential. What a great way to make a difference.
Throughout my life, I have enjoyed and excelled at math and its applications. I graduated summa cum laude from an engineering program at Cal Poly successfully completing significant math coursework through advanced calculus. During the final two years of my undergraduate studies, I tutored university students in a variety of engineering classes, and more recently, I have been tutor ... read more

I am a teacher who has learned through experience. I went from college to Kenya to teach in an international school for 2 years. I learned a lot about teaching and culture during that time. When I returned I subbed for 2.5 years in which I learned more than all my schooling. During that time I earned a master's and have gone on to move in the direction that jobs have come.I taught SPED for a year, taught at an Outdoor School for a year, taught Kindergarten at a private school and worked with Autistic children as a one on one tutor. I have dabbled in Pre-K and upper grades a little. I am continuing to learn by taking Field Study Biology classes and going to educational workshops and personal growth programs.
I am a person who likes to teach one on one. I like to find what the student's interest is and tailor their teaching to that. I believe all children have a gift and an inter ... read more

It has been my experience that students are more successful if they can apply and practice any theory to which they may be exposed. Given this notion, I try to provide real world applications to whatever concept I introduce, whether teaching in a classroom setting or tutoring one on one. If this approach is not appropriate, I will break down the concept into the simplest possible learning steps. I will use whatever approach that best blends the complex mix of individual learning style and subject matter to achieve a successful learning experience for my student.

Tutoring my fellow classmates was an integral part of my college experience. At Yuba College, I tutored math and chemistry in the College Success Center for two school years. I was in demand, as even fellow tutors would seek my help. I was also requested by my physics professor to tutor physics in the Hard Math Cafe on campus. While at UCI, where I graduated Cum Laude with a mathematics degree, I would often help fellow students, even during the professor's office hours when the professor was busy with another student. I enjoy imparting my skills upon those I help, resulting in increased insight and understanding for those tutored.
Knowledge and skills are most permanent when we discover and create for ourselves, so I like to be a guide that leads the student to their own conclusions, rather than take over and lecture. I will be there to direct and support the student; I like ... read more

I believe that most subjects are not difficult to master. Most problems come from "under learning" the subject. Repetition may work for some subjects, but with math the student needs to understand WHY a process works. Once this is learned, the rest comes rather easily. When the student takes for granted a way to solve a problem, they are lost when the problem is presented in a different way. But, if the student understands the WHY, the presentation of the problem does not matter.

I have worked with children of all ages in different environments and capacities for the past 20 years. It all started at the YMCA Afterschool and Summer Programs which gave me my first satisfactory feeling for being around young people. That led to substitute teaching and to 6 years in the classroom with 6th graders. For 1 year I taught English as a Foreign Language in Slovenia and Germany. Finally, I yearned for more one on one experience which resulted in being a Independent Study teacher for the past 5 years. I believe my variety of experiences as an educator has prepared me well to help a wide range of students.
With my background and degree being in music, I have enjoyed finding creative ways to induce wonder and enthusiasm for learning in my students. I have always accomplished this with the utmost patience, consideration and respect. This last quality in my style (respect o ... read more

My main goal working with children is to give them the help and support they need to achieve their own goals. Education is of paramount importance for a child's future, in order to not only establish financial security, but so that they may find a path in life. I know that in order for a child to find success, they need an adult who can listen, be patient, and understand each child's personal needs. Every child has a different background, temperament, and personallity that is continuously molded by the adults and peers in their life. As a tutor I know it is my responsibility to provide each child encouragement while doing the best possible to clearly and easily explain and teach.

I remember my first tutor in junior high. He helped me gain an understanding beyond just the numbers and the formulas. From his example, I started tutoring friends as a sophomore in high school. I enjoy helping others see beyond the numbers, in understanding the basics, and seeing how everything fits together. I enjoy guiding the way and helping to enlighten children that have that innate curiosity. How many can envision the one (or two) individuals that helped them to see and imagine? I do and have strived to be there for friends, family, and students alike.

I enjoy teaching individuals more than large groups. I enjoy getting to know the interests of those I teach and use that to find ways to motivate students. I am extremely patient and very enthusiastic about student learning. I give constant feedback to the learner and will be quick to praise the student when they are successful. I believe that everyone can learn and succeed if they are given the opportunity and a positive environment to enable them to meet their full potential. A Little Bit About Me...

For the past 10 years, I have worked in my community, helping to better the lives of children. At age 15, I began mentoring young girls and volunteering for a non-profit organization, counseling developmentally delayed children and at-risk youth. I later went on to become a Behavioral Therapist, educating children with autism. My love for children (and passion for education) was the determining factor in the course of my college career. I attained a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Utah in 2008 (graduating with a cumulative GPA of 3.8). In addition to my Psychology degree, I also hold a certificate in Human Factors Engineering and recently published research in this field.
