A Little Bit About Me...

I began teaching/tutoring while in graduate school. I tutored undergrads in sociology, psychology, and social statistics. I also taught driver's education to high school students while in grad school. After ten years working in law enforcement, I switched to social services and I have been mentoring children in foster care for the past twenty years.
I try to keep the material fresh and I avoid boredom and repetition at all costs. One of my best tools to connect with a young person is through humor. If the student feels relaxed they are more likely to absorb the information. I also use reverse psychology to turn the tables so they actually find themselves teaching me the material. This has been a successful tool with children I have mentored as well as my own children.

I have always had a strong desire to learn and to teach. I work hard and I am diligent to complete a task. My joy is to work with children of any age to help them grow and develop and learn. I believe it takes love, grace and patience to teach a child. The student must not only be expected to learn from the tutor, but the tutor must also learn from the student. Learning can be made enjoyable when a teacher has an encouraging spirit and does not give up on th ... read more

I love the written word and reaching people, so I ultimately chose to major in journalism. My love for teaching and instructing students led me to pursue my minor in education. In the past three years, I've tutored undergraduates in writing (grammar, composition, etc), graduate students (editing theses), proofing resumes and technical documents, and tutoring elementary and high school students in reading and basic math.
College students are difficult to work with because they think they know it all. This was a blessing in disguise because it taught me not only to learn different ways to tutor a student, but also to figure out through body language and little signals as to whether or not they were actually comprehending the information. Teaching is not just giving information and hoping they retain it. My teaching style consists of teaching, asking questions to ensure they know or u ... read more

I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is my desire as an educator to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites a sharing of ideas. For me, teaching provides an opportunity for continual learning and growth. One of my hopes as an educator is to instill a love of learning in my students as I share my own passion for learning with them. These children are our future. I feel there is a need for compassionate, strong, and dedicated individuals who are excited about working with children. In our competitive society it is important for students not only to receive a solid education, but to work with someone who is aware of and sensitive to their individua ... read more

I have taught in many environments under many circumstances. My work as a geometry tutor for a 10th grade enabled me to learn to explore teaching methods that best suited him. As a TA, I reviewed concepts that helped reiterate important biological facts. Because my boss was a Biology Education specialist, she taught us teaching methods like hands-on activities and an inquisitive teaching style that makes concepts stick. For outreach, I acted as a museum docent to groups of students (K-12), catering each exhibit to the age level of each group. I also worked as a science summer camp counselor. These experiences have enabled me to learn my own teaching style and understand the best methods for each age group, kids to young adults.
During my sophomore year in college, I tutored a 10th grader in geometry for two semesters. I also tutored him and one of his peers for one semester in Alge ... read more

My teaching style is relaxed, but consistent and firm. I expect assignments to be completed and timely, and spend the time with the student instructing and revising. I ask that parents are a part of the experience. I like to communicate with the family frequently so that they are aware of the assigned tasks and they can make me aware of the student's feelings and needs. It is my opinion that when the family, the teacher/tutor and the student are working together toward a given set of goals and objectives the growth is expedited.
I have been teaching students in classrooms, small group settings and individually for the past seven years. I begin with my students by assessing their strengths and building on them so that students are aware of their successes and are confident to atttempt new material. I believe that, although learning comes when you are a student but understanding comes when you start teaching. I always tell my students to be open and forward. I make sure that before they do their part of the job, I have done mine in research over the best way to make difficult concepts understood easily with practical Examples.

I enjoy working with kids and have been doing it for many years. I believe all children can learn but not all children learn the same way. In my past expereience, I have found you often have to go outside the box to find what works and try many different methods. I feel very strongly about small group learning and think it is very effective when it is done in the right setting. I strive to be the best educator I can because I want that child to have strong foundation for the next chapter in their life.
For the past eight years I have been working in the Nashville, TN area. My first year there I worked as a site director for the YMCA before and afterschool program. After leaving the YMCA, I got a teaching job for the Metro Nashville public schools teaching 2nd and 3rd grade. While teaching, I enjoyed working with small groups of students that were below reading level. I taught for 7 ... read more

I have always been a quick learner when it comes to mathematics. It is something that comes almost natural to me. With that said, I understand that this is not the case for everyone. I feel that a good majority of people hate math because they don't understand math, and because they don't understand math right away, they don't try to understand it. I had a wise professor once tell me, "Math isn't difficult; there is no such thing as difficult math. It just seems difficult because you haven't learned it yet". I think math can be easy for anyone, they just have to learn it first.
I started tutoring math when I attended Faulkner State College. I then attended the University of South Alabama where I tutored math and physics. I have tutored all levels of math and also tutored not only physics, but lab activites as well.

I am a recent graduate of the University of South Alabama, College of Education. I have completed two semesters of student teaching, one semester in classroom observation/aide, and one semester as a reading tutor. In addition to these degree requirements, I have been an activity presenter at the Baldwin County Water Festival for the past four years. It is my belief that all students are capable of obtaining the academic goals when they are given the necessary tools need to be successful. I believe that all students are capable of learning in their own unique and indivual styles. I am a firm believer in learning through inquiry and hands-on experiences. By incorporation inquiry into a lesson a student is required to ask themselves question about the topic and solve problems using the materials given to them. When I see the "light bulb" go off in one of my students it is the most amazing moment for me. I strive to reach all mof my students and make their learning experience a life long positive memory.

Coming from a family of educators, I knew from an early age that I would become a teacher myself; therefore, all the steps taken to prepare for my professional life have been to enable me to be the best teacher I can be. I received both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of South Alabama. I received classroom teaching experience at a local middle school and as a university instructor. I currently have an extremely rewarding position with the Mobile Housing Board developing, coordinating, and instructing GED preparation classes. With this program I teach GED concepts and both group and individually tutor numerous students. I take pride in the fact that 100% of the students I referred to the official GED test obtained their GED. Unfortunately, the grant I work under has expired, and I will now explore more opportunities in the world of education.
