I have worked mainly with children, but enjoy teaching all ages. I tend to take a systematic approach and keep my lessons structured. I like to have students keep some sort of record of their practice time, as well as their progress. I also am a strong believer in making learning fun, so I try to listen to my students' needs and pay attention to their learning styles so I can create activities that they will not only find educational but fun as well.
I began teaching at a very young age. I began my own music lesson company which taught basic level of piano, guitar, saxophone and voice lessons out of my house before I began high school. After achieving my certificate of proficiency in Spanish from Hamline I then began to also privately tutor Spanish. I also have earned my TEFL/TESOL certificate and will eventually go abroad and teach English overseas.

On first obtaining my degree in South Africa, I taught there as a Fourth Grade teacher for three and a half years. My other classroom experience was in 1997-1998 when I taught as a substitute teacher at an elementary school in South Saint Paul. Those two experiences have taught me that the academic subject to which I am most drawn is English. Although most of my teaching experience since then has been in music, I feel that teaching piano is the same thing as tutoring. I really enjoy the one-on-one in my piano lessons, and find it extremely rewarding to come up with new ways of teaching a concept that a student is finding confusing. I would love to take the skills I have aquired as a piano teacher, and use them to help someone learn how to read.

I am in the Education field to make a difference in student’s lives. I hope to do this through instruction and example. I believe these two elements intertwined and essential for any educator. I am value the “Teacher as facilitator” education model. Today, I classify my teaching style as a constructivist theory with humanist elements. I believe that a combination of these three models will ensure the greatest amount of learning for students as I prepare them for further education. In my experience, working with at-risk, failing, or youth in general requires a level of acceptance from the student. Educators cannot reach that level if they talk down to their students.
