As I am still a student myself, I bring a slightly unique perspective to tutoring. I know and appreciate the importance of a compelling instructor, who is both enthusiastic and intelligent, but also patient and understanding. I love the sciences, but I have not been working in the field for so long as to not remember the frustration most students feel when first grasping the founding principles. I strongly believe that learning is best facilitated through problem solving rather than rote memorization, especially within the sciences. Asking questions is far more important than answering them, and engendering a genuine interest in learning is paramount above all else.

I believe in an interactive learning environment where I am constantly asking students for their inputs and working through problems with them. This way, they become confident in their abilities to solve difficult problems and provoke critical thinking.
I am currently a graduate student in petroleum engineering. As an undergrad I worked as a mentor for a freshman in my major, helping him cope with school and advising him of the courses he needs to take. I also provide tutoring when needed. In high school I was part of a program called PEPP where high school students provided tutoring to middle school students. I was also involved in a program developed by my school's Honor Society where we tutor our peers in math and science courses. Additionally, I was a summer camp counselor for three summers and I was responsible for coordinating various activities for the children each week.

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated with a degree in earth science education in 1995. I worked for several years as a substitute teacher and then returned to college to gain biology certification. I worked at a local high school for five years teaching seventh grade science and senior high general science. For the last six years I have worked for a head start program. I am currently doing subsitute teaching again and would love to help students be successful by providing tutoring. Over the years I have worked with a variety of age levels of students and thier families.
