I always tried to keep my approach as grounded as possible so that even my least talented tutees could grasp the task at hand. For instance, I feel it important to always sound out the words on a page, making sure the words flow smoothly off the tongue and not just in the mind. I do this so that the writing style, while formal, is also practical and easily accessed by the student as they write. I also feel it best to not focus too strongly on a student's weaknesses, but to feel out their strengths so that they may use those strengths to really work out their difficulties. I try to make a student not have to rely to strongly upon a tutor, but to, after not too long, walk away with the ability to tutor themselves better. Because of my experience in teaching my own children, I have discovered that no child is too young to learn. Often people will not consider an infant or toddler a "functioning human being" until the child can speak. This is so inaccurate! I taught one of my daughters to read at age four.
