I have always wanted to teach Math and have finally been able to take time off from full time work to obtain the required education to do so. I realize that many folks experience difficulty learning Math. In most cases, there are several ways to teach a particular concept. If one method does not click with a student, I will try another method until we find on that works. I also like to teach using practical examples that students may actually experience in their life to help students understand the value of learning math.
For the past 28 years, I have worked in Industry as an Electrical Engineer. I am currently pursuing a Master of Science degree in Mathematical Sciences with the goal of teaching college math, preferably at a Community College. My teaching style varies with student learning styles. Although drill may be appropriate for some skills, my preference is project or problem based methods that draw on the learner's experiences and interests. I work from students' current skill levels, provide challenging problems, model successful learning skills, encourage students' to express creativity and intuition, and employ formative and normative assessments. I firmly believe that more advanced mathemtaics can be taught to younger and more diverse students. I believe that all students, of all skill levels, can learn mathemtaics if creatively taught.
