I have a bachelor's degree from the College of Saint Benedict. During my college education I worked for three years as a college writing tutor helping my students achieve academic excellence. Due to my degree and work experience I have ample experience and expertise in grammar, writing process and writing technique. Following my education I served two years with AmeriCorps: The first year with the Minnesota ReadingCorps wherein I worked with under-achieving first graders and the second year with the National Civilian Community Corps wherein I traveled the American Southwest doing various service projects. As a teacher with dyslexia I felt that I was unable to teach reading to my students. I went in search of more training and found Alphabetic Phonics a Orton Gillingham program. I have sense used what I learn in the almost 160 hours of training with 11 students and seen progress in all of them. I love working with children and helping fulfill their potential. I like at children as water that must be directed in the right direction. I will do this my trying to find research validated methods of teaching that teaching to all the learning styles. If the child does not learn the first time I will try again and again until they have got it.

I believe in setting high expectations for students and believe that all students can learn and excel. Most of the students I work with have had such negative experiences with school that they become frustrated. I work to restore their self-esteem and to teach them to recognize what they need to do to learn. I compare my students to cars: some have automatic transmissions and they just get in and drive without much effort; some are like standard transmissions - it's not as easy for them, it's more work to learn how to work a clutch and shift gears, but they can learn to go as far and as well as the "automatic transmission" students.
