I have received extensive formal training in all of the sciences, especially biology and microbiology. I also spent many years conducting research and teaching for various colleges and universities. I have taught a wide variety of students, including nursing students, science majors, and non-science majors. Having obtained my own education as a nontraditional student, I relate very well to their situation and I derive a great deal of satisfaction from working with them. I have enjoyed each experience I have had with teaching, beginning with an informal position as a study group leader in the Genetics course I completed at Penn State University. While working on my MS at the University of Tennessee, I taught lecture and outdoor laboratory sessions for the Ornithology course, which included about 30 students. As the coordinator of the Conservation Science Internship Program at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, I am responsible for much of the training of 5-11 interns at one time. The Sanctuary hosts interns from all over the world including 26 interns (age range: 17-42) from 24 countries in my time as coordinator. I also teach two 1-credit courses per year as an instructor with Cedar Crest College in Allentown, PA.

When teaching or tutoring a student I have found that there are several factors in how it should be approached. The most important of the factors are the subject matter and the students learning style. The learning style of the student has to be considered when teaching. Helping a student learn requires finding the most effective method. You want to make sure they understand the subject matter while exposing them to other possible ways to approach difficult problems. You can provide tools not only for the problems they are having but preparing them to handle future difficulties. A Little Bit About Me...

I have become very adept at determining what level each student is at and tailoring my teaching style to suit the students that I am working with. In a class of over 20, I was able to reach each student with modified lessons and assignments. In the case of individual tutoring, I move at a rate that challenges the student while giving them ample opportunities to feel successful.
