Call the department and/or ask around; you won't find anyone more interested or able to help you (or your son/daughter/friend/family member) fix their problems. I am a Biochemist by training, though most of my teaching volume comes from those struggling with high school or University Chemistry, semesters 1 and 2. After obtaining a list of objectives, I like to offer a pop quiz to set a baseline. Thereafter, topics are divided in number of days available for preparation. Most important topics and topics not well understood get time and individualized priority. Offer a challenge test at the end. Harder than the test students will face but no so hard as to lower self steem.

I use verbal and visual techniques for teaching and prefer to add an element of kinetic learning for tutoring. I explain the material in the book, preferably after the students have read the chapter. I also provide time for questions and answers, as well as group discussions and projects. I rely on exams only to show me if the students are understanding the material.
