A Little Bit About Me...

The thing I enjoy most about teaching is seeing a concept "click" in a child's head. I feel that this is possible with all children if the right strategy is used to teach them. Students learn in lots of different ways. I feel it would be my job as a tutor to find out what would work in each student's academic life. Prior to and during my employment with Metropolitan Community College (Between 1998 and 2007) I was a volunteer tutor with non traditional students in the Adult Basic Education/General Education Development ABE/GED program of Metro community college.
I love to see the proverbial light come on and the students eyes widen and they say "OH! I get it!" I've tutored a wide variety of students from diverse backgrounds. I try to make mathematics fun, like a puzzle to be figured out, and remove the "hard chore" stigma which is generally hard pressed into a students mind by the time I arrive. Getting the student to believe in themselves and believe mathematics isn't a daunting task it's just difficult until you learn the tricks is my goal. I've notice most students find word problems to be most challenging so I purchased a word problem book to draw examples from which seems to help.

I have a broad range of teaching experience. I've worked with students with behavior and developmental disorders, English Language Learner students, and a wide variety of ability and age levels. My previous positions allowed me to work in both rural and urban areas with students and families from various social, economic, and educational backgrounds.
I do my best to determine how each child learns and tailor my instruction accordingly. I realize not everyone processes information in the same way and work hard to vary my teaching methods as needed. If a student is struggling, I seek input from the student and their parents. As a college graduate and a mentor at a behavioral health facility I have gained valuable knowledge and confidence in one on one guidance. I have a BA in psychology and a BFA in studio arts and I am currently pursuing a place as a PhD candidate in the educational psychology program at UNL. I am experienced in math, english, psychology, and studio art. Also, I volunteered for the Lincoln Initiative for Tutoring program where I tutored elementary students after school and served as a role model.
My teaching style is about positive feedback and patience. With my experience in psychology I have found that a calm nurturing environment lends itself to bolstering understanding for children.
