My teaching style is modeled after the Princeton Method, which is the way that I was taught to teach tennis. The Princeton method focuses on the positive. So instead of saying "don't skip the hesitation for a period mark", I would say "remember to hesitate in between sentences".
I started teaching tennis to juniors at the age of 16. I enjoyed that very much. For close to 10 years I taught at a country club in Connecticut. During my time there I did not focus on winning, but our record went from 0-7 to 7-0. I attribute this to the power of positive teaching. After I completed Loyola University MD, I went into B2B Corporate sales, where I was successful, but my passion remained with teaching. Recently I was a PE Coach at a school, and I started an after school program for tennis and golf for the children.

I am a very kind hearted person who believes every child can learn. I am patient and caring and I believe in positive reassurance as a way to encourage learning. I have found that the most important aspect of teaching is to inspire the student by setting an example. I find this especially appealing because I feel that it is important for a student to want to learn. I strive to not exclude any child or prevent learning in any way. I want to help children find the best way for them to learn based on their specific capabilities. I want my students to gain independence and be able to enjoy learning. I truly believe that children are the future and I teach and treat them according to that. Teaching with Understanding is the primary goal that I have. Through my own experience I have learned that every child learns and understands differently and it is my job to teach them accordingly. I am always looking for new, inventive and effective ways of teaching. I have great patience, and a good listener; which I personally feel is important when teaching a child, I feel by listening to a child a teacher can discover the child’s uniqueness and apply their teaching to that. I am eclectic in my approaches towards teaching, ranging from Montessori and Classroom Without Walls, to Behaviorist and Cognitive approaches. I use what is observable, measurable, and works. I am always prepared to pull a rabbit out of my hat, and I always prepare additional alternative lesson plans in case an approach does not seem doable. I begin tutor sessions with interviews to assess goals. The ultimate goal is always for the tutee to become an independent learner.
Tutoring is a profession which I have enjoyed for over nine years, often while teaching in the classroom or online, concurrently. I was able to teach multi-subjects to college students because I excelled in all subjects myself, receiving numerous scholarship awards and honors. I chose after school tutoring as my extra duty assignment while teaching middle school and high school. I enjoy tutoring students because I ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe children learn when you meet them at their own level, whatever that may be. Once you discover what the student knows, you can take the next step by building on that knowledge. I believe in small, successful steps. Once a student grasps a concept, it is evident in their face. I believe in leaving a student's learning session on a positive note.
I have worked for over 30 years in the field of teaching, both elementary students and special education students of all ages. I earned my BS in Child Development/Special Education from the Universisty of La Verne, CA. I have been a Substitute Teacher in the San Bernardino City Unified School District for nine and one-half years. I feel my greatest skill is in breaking down subject matter into smaller components until understanding occurs.
