I used to hate math, now I love it.

I received a BS in Horticulture from Va. Polytechnic Institute and State University. majored in Biology (Botany) for 3 years at Virginia Commonwealth Univ. and College of William and Mary. Recently retook Precalculus, Calculus 1, Calculus 2, and Calculus 3 at Virginia Western Community College. I have a background tutoring and running a tutoring center for STEM subjects at a community college for 3 years. I have been tutoring in some form for 6 years. I have a certification in tutoring ESL and several years experience in that.
i am pretty relaxed and informal, but I expect students to do the work assigned. I help, but I don't do the work for them. I use Socratic questioning to get students to understand the material. I stress learning concepts and building on them as opposed to memorizing or guessing enough to pass a test.

More About This Tutor...

After graduating from Virginia Tech in 1973, I decided that I would enter the field of public education. After 6 years of successful and rewarding experiences in secondary education, I decided to return to college and obtain a Masters Degree in Education. Upon receiving my Masters in 1984, I taught at the post secondary level in both Virginia and North Carolina. At the post secondary level, I had the opportunity to teach a wide variety of subjects from Math to Business Administration.
I thoroughly enjoy teaching students at various ages and stages of development. I consider myself to be very creative, and I try to give the students as much hands-on experience as possible. I am constantly seeking feedback from the student in terms of how well I am presenting the subject matter, so my methods of teaching will vary. I am always open to new ideas. Failure is not a word in my teac ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am compassionate, patient, and sincere. I employ various teaching styles depending on the age and needs of the student. For college and high school students, I ask that students bring their textbooks as well as notes to each session. I often prepare example questions for material similar to that tested on an exam. Not only does this allow the student with an opportunity to practice additional problems in areas that are weak, but also ensures that the student fully comprehends the information. When tutoring younger children, I believe active learning is best because many children are visual and/or kinesthetic learners. I tutor children using methods that best match his/her learning style.
As a recent graduate from the College of William & Mary, I have earned a bachelor’s degree (BS) in Neuroscience and a minor in Biochemistry. As a tutor for four years, I have tutored both college ... read more

I have accumulated 25 years of teaching experience, both in the classroom setting and on an individual basis. I taught English, remedial through college prep levels, in public education for 16 years, and then I moved into private school education for 9 years. I have especially enjoyed working with foreign exchange students, specifically German, Korean, Japanese, and Hispanic. I also have experience as a peer mentor for other educators. My expertise lies in the areas of written and spoken communication, with an emhasis on essay and research paper writing.
I believe an interactive approach to teaching is the most effective style of relaying information. Lecture with constant questioning and feedback has proven effective for my classroom situations in the past. I also have had great success with modeling the writing process in a step-by-step procedural format. My students and I both e ... read more

My education experience spans many areas. I have taught in middle and high school classrooms, have tutored for public school programs, tutored at after school learning centers, tutored in church programs, and managed a learning center as the human resources, business, sales, and education director in charge of all students programs from initial testing to post testing. My great pleasure in life is education and I have worked with students from pre-K through college age. My recently tutored subjects are science (biology and chemistry), math (through algebra 2 and geometry), study skills, SAT (and other test) Prep, reading and writing.
I believe that all students can learn if they are taught in a style that is most conducive to their learning style and motivations. To make that happen for each of my students, I try to assess their specific learning styles early on and get to know ... read more
