We learn from our own mistakes.

I taught Arabic as a second language in Plainfield Indiana to students of different ages and of both sexes. I taught all language skills with some concentration on reading skills and conversation. The size of the class was relatively big as I had about 40 students. I encouraged students to express their ideas in the form of written sentences and the I would go over what they wrote in order to correct their sentences by showing the how to construct a sound Arabic sentences.
I encourage my students to be the core of teaching by stimulating them to engage in discussions about certain topics of their liking. Also, I encourage them express themselves even though they might make mistakes. I help them find why is it a mistake and how to correct them.

My original degree was in English with a minor in Spanish. I received my teaching certification in 1979 in Secondary English/Spanish. I taught adult ESL part time for 2 years in the evenings. After a taste in this field, I began teaching in ESL and have taught 9 years in public schools. With one school district I also had a class helping students with the English part of the TAAS test. During the rest of my career I taught Spanish which was also 9 years.
I believe the first thing you need to do is to find out what the student needs help with. At times I have used music, poetry, or computer programs to get the students attention. I think it takes a lot for one teacher to reach all of types of students who are all at different levels of interest in the subject being taught as well as at different levels of understanding. However, I feel it is the teacher's responsibility to give them all equal opportunity to learn. It is not just about grades and assignments, that is just the means to an end, but it is about learning. In order for the students to learn, the teacher needs to be passionate about the students as well as the subject that is being taught. That will instill in the students a desire to learn and understand.
