My teaching style is very simple and effective. I start with Technique. I believe that it is the best interest of a student’s success to learn about the instrument before learning how to play it. Then, I incorporate Basic Theory. It is also important for a student to understand why they are playing and how music flows together. My students then begin to learn the major fundamentals of the Bass; Groove, Feel, and how to be a leader. They will also learn how to write their own music, and if they desire how to read and notate. Music Theory is a big part of my curriculum. I feel it is the most important skill to understand what you are playing and why. I encourage the students at any time can bring in their own material to learn. My belief is based upon the idea that all children are different and consequently, they learn differently. I have been taught how to approach those of ESL backgrounds, a multitude of handicaps, and learning disabilities, just to name a few. For instance, every once in a while, a child will take too long to copy notes off of the board or doesn't understand directions that well. For istances like this, I write down notes and tape them to their desks, provide additional coaching and prompts, or even modify assignments. I have found that teaching is what I love to do and learning about children through the perspective of my education has made me so much more successful in how I approach children as a class, but also at an individual level.
