A Little Bit About Me...

I grew up with both partents in the public education system, I was a student-teacher in H.S. and I earned a bachelor degree in Parks, Recreation, Natural Resource Management with a minor in Art Education. After graduation I taught Art and pre-school classes for the Springfield, MO Parks Dept. I was a librarian at the Springfield Art Museum. I worked for the Dept. of Social Services, Div. of Youth Services for 14 years and assisted the teachers with the education ciriculum. I taught Outdoor Stress Challenge Programs to the youth in a rehabilitation program.
I enjoy teaching and working with children. I believe every child has a different way of learning and I am capable of meeting the needs of each student. I am a very patient teacher. If it seems someone is 'just not getting it' I will try a different approach. People learn at different levels, and what works for one does not always work for another; therefore,finding the way for each individual student is the key. I have also found that most people learn a task by 'hands on' learning, not listening to how it should be done. In this situation, giving someone the tools to do the work themselves gives them the confidence to do it, and feel good about conquering the challenge.
As a working professional, I was driven later in life to get a degree that was started right after high school. I believe every child can learn anything, it is just a matter of understanding how each child's brain functions. Some students learn by example and repetition, while some need hands-on activities in order to process the main concept and remember it. I do believe that every student needs plenty of practice in order to maintain the knowledge of each lesson. I believe this practice should include guided practice as well as independent practice so that I can understand each student's thought process. I prefer tutoring rather than a classroom setting so that I can better accommodate each student's needs.
