A Little Bit About Me...

I first started teaching in 2003 as a substitute to supplement the income from my guiding business during the slower portion of the year. After showing that I was very capable in the classroom and could quickly develop a strong rapport with coworkers and students, I was hired for the year when another teacher left unexpectedly. I went to school for the next year at the University of Kentucky, did not finish my degree, but earned enough credits to be hired by to teach in their Alternative School. I taught and was a leader and innovator at Cropper Alternative School for the next five years, until I decided to move to this part of the country after a recent divorce. I have a degree in Biology Education/Science Education from Central Washington University and did hold a Washington State teaching certificate in Biology and General Science until I moved down to California in 2000. A Little Bit About Me...

I have taught Medical Neuroanatomy to medical students at the University of Iowa Medical School. Students were directed in dissecting and identifying parts of the human brain. This occurred in small groups of five or six students. I also taught Molecular Neurobiology at Friday Harbor Laboratories to graduate students who came from around the world to take the course. This involved all parts of a laboratory class including lectures, small group discussions, and one-on-one teaching. I have also tutored numerous undergraduates in a variety of math and science areas.
My teaching style varies depending on the student. Perhaps my biggest asset is empathy as I can easily tell when a student (or group) gets it. I have tutored math, biology and chemistry for the last 5 years at a college level. In math, I tutored up to the trigonometry level, as well as holding math seminars lasting as long as 2 weeks. In biology, I have tutored human biology, anatomy, physiology and microbiology for 5 years. In addition, I was offered a teaching assistant position for the lab portions of anatomy (which I did for three years) and microbiology (which I did for one year.)
